CEMS Probes: Ensuring Representative Samples in Emissions Monitoring with AQMS
Regulations outline specific guidelines for CEMS (Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems) to ensure accurate, representative samples. These guidelines include the following recommendations:
- CEMS Placement:
- The measurement point should be located at least two equivalent diameters downstream from the nearest control device or pollutant generation point. This ensures that the sample is not influenced by sudden changes in pollutant concentration or emission rate.
- The probe should also be placed at least half an equivalent diameter upstream from the effluent exhaust or control device.
- Point CEMS:
- The sampling point should be no less than 1.0 meter (3.3 feet) from the stack or duct wall.
- It should be located within or centrally over the centroidal area of the stack or duct cross-section to ensure uniform sampling across the flow.
- Path CEMS:
- The measurement path should be entirely within the inner area, 1.0 meter (3.3 feet) from the stack or duct wall.
- Alternatively, at least 70% of the path should lie within the inner 50% of the cross-sectional area.
- The path should also be centrally located over any part of the centroidal area.

Rental Indoor air quality
CEMS (Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems) track pollutants in real-time, ensuring compliance with Australian NEPM, U.S. EPA, MCERTS, and EN 14181 standards.
In-situ Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEMS) systems measure pollutant concentrations directly in stacks or ducts in real time, eliminating the need for pumps, filters, or sample conditioning for efficient monitoring.
Long and short terms hire packages available for a wide range of MCERTS approved CEM’s systems available throughout Australia.
